Car Loan vs PCP Finance: Key Differences for UK Buyers

A dealer may show a PCP monthly payment far lower than a bank loan repayment on the same car. That does not automatically make PCP cheaper. The central question in a UK car loan vs PCP finance comparison is what you pay, what you own and what happens when the agreement finishes.

A personal loan lets you buy the vehicle outright and repay the lender separately. Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) leaves a sizeable payment until the end, when you decide whether to buy. Both can make sense, but comparing monthly payments alone misses the point.

Car loan vs PCP: the main differences

With an unsecured personal loan, you borrow money, pay the seller and own the car immediately. You repay the borrowing in instalments. There is no finance-related mileage limit or balloon payment, although you still owe the loan if you sell the vehicle.

PCP is finance tied to a specific car. You generally pay a deposit, monthly instalments and, only if you want to keep it, a substantial optional final payment. The finance company owns the vehicle until purchase is completed. Returning it can involve excess-mileage or damage charges.

A PCP vs personal loan comparison therefore involves flexibility as well as cost: ownership starts immediately with the loan, while PCP offers an end-of-term decision.

Why are PCP monthly payments usually lower?

PCP payments depend on the car’s price, deposit, expected value at the end and finance charges. The projected end value, often called the Guaranteed Minimum Future Value (GMFV), normally forms the optional final or balloon payment.

Leaving that balance outstanding reduces regular instalments. However, interest generally reflects the amount financed, including the deferred balance. Lower payments need not mean lower borrowing costs. A personal loan instead usually repays the amount borrowed, plus interest, over its term without a separate vehicle purchase payment.

Who owns the car, and can you sell it?

Vehicle ownership finance matters particularly if your plans change. With an unsecured personal loan, you can normally sell or modify the car without lender permission. Selling it does not cancel your debt; repayments remain due unless you settle the loan.

With PCP, you cannot sell the vehicle as though you own it outright. Obtain a settlement figure and arrange to clear the finance before or through any sale or part-exchange.

You may be able to borrow the entire purchase price using a personal loan, so a deposit is optional. PCP typically has an upfront deposit, although individual offers vary. Compare upfront spending as well as the regular payment.

APR, deposits and the total amount payable

APR helps compare annualised borrowing costs, but a sound dealer finance comparison also checks the cash price, deposit, term, fees, total amount payable and final balloon. If you intend to keep the car, include that balloon in the cost calculation.

Ask for comparable quotes on the same vehicle. A representative APR is not a guaranteed individual rate. Also check whether a dealer deposit contribution or discount depends on accepting its finance.

Example: financing an £18,000 car

Suppose a buyer puts £2,000 towards an £18,000 car. An illustrative personal-loan quote covers the remaining £16,000 through 48 payments of £390. Including the deposit, the buyer pays £20,720 and owns the car from purchase, while remaining responsible for the loan.

An illustrative PCP quote instead requires the £2,000 deposit, 48 payments of £230 and an £8,000 balloon. The buyer pays £13,040 before deciding what to do next, or £21,040 in total if they buy the car. The monthly instalment is lower, but ownership requires a sizeable final payment.

These figures illustrate payment structures, not live offers or matching APRs. Returning the PCP car means you do not retain the vehicle, and contractual condition and mileage rules still apply. Compare like-for-like quotes before deciding.

Mileage limits and return condition

PCP generally specifies an annual mileage allowance because expected mileage affects the car’s projected value. Exceeding it can mean a per-mile charge if you return the vehicle. Damage beyond accepted wear and tear may also cost extra.

Someone with a long commute or unpredictable journeys should check these provisions carefully. A personal loan has no finance-related mileage restriction, although extra miles still affect resale value and maintenance.

Use your recent driving history to estimate annual mileage, then request the excess-mileage rate and return-condition standards in writing. Budget for servicing, tyres, insurance and fuel too. Our car finance affordability checklist can help with those running costs.

What happens at the end?

Personal loan

Once the loan is repaid, there is no balloon or vehicle handback process. You already own the car and can keep or sell it. If you want to repay early, obtain a settlement quote and ask about any early repayment charge.

PCP agreement

At the scheduled end, you can generally pay the balloon to keep the car, return it under the agreed conditions, or use any available equity towards another car. Equity is not guaranteed: it depends on the car’s value relative to the outstanding finance.

Ending PCP early is different. Eligible regulated agreements can give you a statutory voluntary-termination right after paying, or making up, 50% of the total amount payable, including the balloon. You remain responsible for taking reasonable care of the car. Ask the lender for your figures before acting.

Which works best for your plans?

A personal loan may suit a driver who intends to keep a car for years and values unlimited mileage and immediate ownership. PCP may appeal if lower scheduled payments and an eventual choice matter more, provided the balloon and return conditions are affordable.

Do not use a low PCP instalment to justify a car that stretches your budget. Our guide to car loan APR and used-car finance checklist offer further ways to assess competing offers.

Frequently asked questions

Is PCP cheaper than a personal car loan in the UK?

PCP often means smaller monthly payments, not necessarily a lower overall cost. Compare complete quotes and include the balloon if you intend to own the vehicle.

Can I sell a car on PCP?

Not freely while the finance provider owns it. Request a settlement figure and arrange for the outstanding finance to be cleared through an appropriate sale or part-exchange process.

Does a personal car loan limit mileage?

An unsecured personal loan used to buy a car outright normally has no finance-imposed mileage allowance. Mileage still affects maintenance and resale value.

Can I return a PCP car whenever I want?

Not necessarily without extra cost. Early settlement, statutory voluntary termination and scheduled end-of-term return are separate processes with different rules.

Making the choice

The best car loan vs PCP finance option in the UK depends on your intended outcome. For ownership and freedom over mileage, compare personal loans. For smaller regular payments and an end-of-term choice, examine PCP’s balloon and return conditions carefully. Ask for written figures, assess the total commitment and choose on the full deal rather than the showroom headline.
